There are a wide variety of resources available to complement Harvest of the Month and the monthly elements. Here are links to many of the resources used in the development of Harvest of the Month.
In January 2011, the USDA released the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, an evidence-based nutritional guidance to promote health, reduce the risk of chronic diseases, and reduce the prevalence of overweight and obesity through improved nutrition and physical activity. The new 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans focus on balancing calories with physical activity and encourage Americans to consume more healthy foods like vegetables, fruits, whole grains, fat-free and low-fat dairy products, and seafood, and to consume less sodium, saturated and trans fats, added sugars, and refined grains.
MyPlate is part of a larger communications initiative based on the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans to help consumers make better food choices. It replaces the former MyPyramid food guidance system. MyPlate is designed to remind Americans to eat healthfully and illustrates the five food groups using a familiar mealtime visual, a place setting.
